Traditional German-Style Wines by the Weis Family

Hans Peter Weis grew up in the vineyards and cellar of his family winery in Zell, Mosel. Next, he studied winemaking, business and viticulture in Germany before traveling to the USA. It wasn’t until he stepped upon the Finger Lakes that he felt that he found home away from home. The soils, climate and grape varieties grown in the area reminded him of the Mosel. First he worked as vineyard manager and winemaker for another winery. During that time, he confirmed the region’s enormous potential for the production of extraordinary wines. Eventually Peter and his wife Ashlee were ready to open Weis Vineyards in 2016. The focus was clear, it was the perfect place to craft traditional German-style wines.

German Influence

Peter Weis has established himself as one of the Finger Lakes’ most respected winemakers. But he still credits his winemaking skills to the days he spent with his dad and grandfather in the family’s winery and vineyard. It wasn’t a scientific approach. Learning the ‘art of wine’ from a young age was a priceless skill that the best universities cannot teach.
